Earl’s Comeback Story

Healed, Whole, Home

Check out the full version of Earl’s story + more news from the Mission in our September Newsletter!

Before The City Mission, Earl was trapped in a vicious cycle of alcoholism and job loss

Earl grew up in the projects. His father was confined to a wheelchair, his mother struggled with alcohol addiction and depression. So when he was just 10 years old, he found a way to cope by following his mother’s example. For the next thirty years, he was caught in the grip of an alcohol addiction that controlled every aspect of his life.

“I prayed, ‘God, I need your help. I’m tired of this cycle; I’ll do whatever it takes to get my life back on track.’”

Because of The City Mission, Earl is a new person – sober, housed, and employed

Earl entered the program at the Mission and began to allow the Lord to work on his heart. He helped out in the maintenance department and went through counseling. Though the process got difficult, Earl stuck with it. “I started smiling again, and I started to feel good about myself,” he shares.

Today, Earl is living in a neighborhood near several other Crossroads graduates, and working in a Honda manufacturing plant. He’s put the past behind him and says,

“[Recovery] is going to take time – a lot of time – but today I’m sober, and I’m headed in the right direction. By the grace of God, I’m a different person now. This is an outstanding program. They make sure the guys have clothes on their backs, food to eat, people to talk to about the issues we have… the Mission is the place to be if you need help.”
