Adult Education and Development Assistant (Laura’s Home & Crossroads)

Interns will assist with offering male or female clients tools needed to enrich their lives, address the underlying cause of their crisis and reorient the client to a stable and sustainable lifestyle. Interns will utilize a curriculum emphasizing employment readiness, basic computer familiarity, workplace etiquette and basic financial management.

  • Develop vocational goals that fit clients’ aptitudes, education levels and physical abilities
  • Monitor and record clients’ progress through the curriculum to ensure that objectives are met
  • Identify barriers to client employment, including inaccessible work sites, transportation problems, childcare needs, etc.
  • Work with clients to develop strategies to overcome barriers
  • Develop, refine, implement and facilitate a basic computer class
  • Conduct mock-interviews with individual clients, and provide supplementary material and handouts for their individual practice and study
  • Develop and facilitate “Dress For Success” workshops
  • Creative Experience—Create and test a project or program that has direct bearing on your major or area of interest

Archivist

Current Semesters Available:  Spring, Summer, Fall

Duties and schedule are flexible and negotiable.

Purpose:

  • Organize and prepare historical records, documents and photos for submission to WRHS archives and/or CSU Special Collections
  • Assist in developing policies and procedures for assuring proper archival of historical documents, audio-visual/electronic media, photos and artifacts, and advise/assist staff in the initial implementation.

Potential Duties:

  • Identify/assess existing in-house documents/media/artifacts that should be archived for historical purposes, in collaboration with staff.
  • Properly clean photographs/slides (removing tape/sticky residue, dust etc.)
  • Obtain high resolution scans of designated documents and photographs.
  • Assist in establishing policies/procedures to assure that relevant materials are properly archived in a timely way with correct dating, authorship, storage etc., and delineation/ communication of staff/board responsibilities in implementation of policies and procedures.
  • Advise staff on recommended storage of electronic/digital records and media.
  • Create and/or recommend cataloging/indexing system for storage of materials (until transfer to WRHS), to maintain an organized system and aid for storing/locating materials.
  • Advise staff/board on correct archival procedures in creating/labeling/storing documents, photographs etc.
  • Advise existing staff on what materials/supplies are needed to assure proper archival and identify an estimated annual budget for this.
  • Advise /assist existing staff in scheduling transfer of historical materials to add to our existing archives at Western Reserve Historical Society.
  • As needed or applicable, work with volunteer Historical Records Assistant.

Case Management Assistant (Laura’s Home & Crossroads)

Interns will assist with determining clients’ eligibility for a variety of social services and/or assist with providing other services related to crisis intervention and short-term case management.
Responsibilities include:
  • Assists with determining clients’ eligibility for a variety of social services and/or assists with providing other services related to crisis intervention and short-term case management.
  • Meet with each client upon arrival and assist clients with completing the intake assessment questionnaire
  • Meet with Phase 1 clients within the first week of intake to see whether or not they are interested in the Program; give each client a brief overview of the program
  • Communicate a brief overview of the daily schedule and rules to each new client
  • Assist in leading various classes and/or support groups when necessary.
  • Assists the Case Workers in identifying client needs and communicating resources
  • Reviews client progress
  • Meets directly with clients by appointment in addition to clients seeking resources during open office hours, and refer clients to various resource directories
  • Perform data entry and assist in tracking client progress towards fulfillment of the program requirements
  • Assist Case Workers in communicating and following-up with the clients to monitor progress on a particular issue, or to confirm clients have connected with necessary resources
  • Assist in coordinating special client events and activities, such as client outings, internal holidays and events, and monthly recognition for those who have completed the program

Computer & Information Systems/IT Helpdesk Intern

The IT Helpdesk intern will have the responsibility of assisting users on various hardware\software related issues.

  • Monitor and respond quickly and effectively to requests received through the IT helpdesk
  • Provide helpdesk support and resolve problems to the end user’s satisfaction
  • Diagnose and resolve technical hardware and software issues
  • Research questions using available information resources
  • Advise user on appropriate action
  • Redirect problems to correct resource
  • Identify and escalate situations requiring urgent attention
  • Track and route problems and requests and document resolutions

Data Analyst – Mission Resource Alliance

Current Semester Available: Summer 2018

The Data Analytics Intern for Mission Resource Alliance (MRA) will be responsible for assisting in donor segmentation and profiling in order to develop predictive behavior/channel models and donor value forecasts. This position is not directly employed by The City Mission, but is located at the same Carnegie and E. 55th campus, and will involve working directly with rescue missions across the country; this includes The City Mission.

Specific responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Work with the Data Programmer and other staff to append wealth engine overlay to MRA main database
  • Analyze data from digital and email streams from Marketwide and MRA RAD
  • Develop optimal ways of communications for specific donors based on their giving history
  • Develop predictive characteristics of specific donors based on past mailings and donations
  • Communicate and lead meetings with MRA staff members
  • Complete a summary report of findings and present to MRA senior staff

Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server and Office
  • Programming Experience
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work and solve problems independently
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding donor information and MRA proprietary systems

Development Assistant

Interns will directly assist the Chief Development Officer with hands-on tasks related to engaging external partners. Responsibilities include:

Marketing and Communications

  • Maintaining existing relationships with contacts in local media (radio/television/print) and developing new relationships.
  • Writing/producing at least one e-newsletter to local media during internship period
  • Assisting with media relationships for all Mission special events during internship period and making preparations with media for events that will occur after term of internship
  • Becoming familiar with City Mission history, programs and services and conducting external presentations to interested audiences (mission fairs at churches; schools; workplace presentations; Rotary, Kiwanis, etc.; others as appropriate)
  • Assisting Development staff with donor acknowledgements, donor database management, and research/preparation of funding proposals to foundations.
  • Developing promotional materials for mailings, special events, etc.

Special Events

  • Assist in managing all media relations for City Mission special events.
  • Being involved in aspects of City Mission fundraising and friend-raising special events: planning, execution and post-event wrap-up
  • Having direct contact with event sponsors, participants, volunteers and the media
  • Being responsible for event logistics in collaboration with other Development Department employees, volunteers and external partners

Donor Relations

  • Maintaining relationships with Hope Partners
  • Assist with online fundraising initiative
  • Heighten presence in social media avenues
  • Perform concentrated research on younger generation donors
  • Developing and strengthening church relationships with donors

Early Childhood Development Assistant

Intern will assist with the development and implementation of structured, age-appropriate curriculum for at-risk child clients, with and without special needs.

  • Understand and enforce policies and procedures to maintain discipline and ensure safety
  • Provide support in maintaining integrity of operating practices, recordkeeping, report writing and attendance systems and data control
  • Organize, lead and supervise recreational activities, such as arts, music, crafts, sports, games and field trips
  • Assist in planning, organizing and facilitating related special events
  • Communicate child’s progress to fellow staff and parents
  • Train and monitor volunteers
  • Ensuring the safety and security of all children at all times
  • Enforcing rules for behavior and procedures to maintain order and structure
  • Organizing and leading innovative activities to promote physical, mental and social development
  • Teaching social skills, personal hygiene, and basic skills such as number, letter, color and shape recognition
  • Observing and evaluating child’s performance, behavior, social development and physical health; work with the mothers and case workers to report their children’s progress and determine priorities for their children and needs

Evaluation/Research Associate

Current Semesters Available: Spring, Summer, Fall

Derive information/data/research on client outcomes that would further strengthen our fundraising capacity for programs at Laura’s Home and/or Crossroads and also support program/ administration decision making. The intern will collaborate with program staff and outside evaluators to (1) identify /develop compelling evaluation tools and measurable outcomes; (2) analyze/interpret data of evaluations/research conducted; (3) provide written/verbal reports on findings to relevant staff; (4) assist in researching evidenced base practices for the populations we serve.

The first evaluation priority is to address items #1 and 2 below at Laura’s Home. Additional or subsequent activities will depend on number of eligible interns applying, interests of the intern(s) and findings obtained and progress made during our work with the CWRU-PERI evaluators in the spring of 2017 (begun.case.edu/peri/). New program development is currently taking place in the men’s program at Crossroads which would benefit from additional evaluation input/assistance.

Essential Job Functions

  • Become familiar with the mission and core values of The City Mission, the service delivery model, programs and services offered, data collection systems and assessment tools currently being used in programs at Laura’s Home and/or Crossroads. Also gain a basic understanding of how good outcome measurements/data are integral to a strong fundraising program while also informing program management and administration.
  • Review potential research/evaluation projects presented by staff and identify what will be required to complete the evaluation in terms of time and other resources. Based on that, work with staff to identify priority projects and develop a plan and timeframe for carrying out those projects in priority order.

Other activities may include:

  • Assisting in implementation of evaluation for new programming at Crossroads and potentially integrate with existing data tracking/evaluation.
  • Compiling data from the Self Sufficiency Matrix and conducting statistical analysis.
  • Assessing progress of men and/or women who have returned to the community after leaving our programs identify what may have contributed to their success or failure.
  • Assessing the level of risk for recidivism (returning to shelter) for current clients, including identifying variables that are contributing to that risk. This may include development of an assessment tool that could be incorporated into or added to the Self Sufficiency Matrix, then compiling/analyzing the data.
  • Reviewing assessments currently being conducted in the Pathways after-school program for children residing at Laura’s Home; working with Pathways staff to compile/analyze/interpret data; work with staff in determining next steps in supporting or enhancing evaluation of Pathways students and programs.
  • Setting up assessments/data collection systems required for specific grants.
  • Conduct the research/assessment and evaluation according to plans in conjunction with staff and provide a written and verbal report on findings.
  • Other responsibilities and opportunities will be considered by both parties.

Inmate Outreach Services Chaplain Assistant

Interns will assist Inmate Outreach Services staff with the inmate correspondence, visitations, group sessions and overall development of the Inmate Outreach Services department.

  • Processing inmate mail and correspondence requests
  • Communicating with correctional facilities and justice system staff for on-site Inmate Outreach Services meetings
  • Communicating with correctional facilities and justice system staff for inmate reentry placements to The City Mission’s Crossroads or Laura’s Home
  • Compiling enclosures for monthly mailings by researching or capturing articles of interest, editing inmates’ contributions to “Thoughts and Things,” and writing on various topics as assigned
  • Accessing resource materials for ministry outreach (Bibles, tracts, literature, envelopes, reading glasses, etc.)
  • Training, supervising and working with volunteers to maintain inmate records and corresponding mailing lists
  • Accompanying IOS chaplains on jail and prison ministry meetings to conduct City Mission Group Meeting visits
  • Engaging the inmates by initiating and facilitating group discussions
  • Building quality, caring relationships with the inmates in order to enhance overall effectiveness of Inmate Outreach Services programming

New Media Assistant

Communicate new and effective stories and information that support the mission and core values of TCM, using various mediums which may include two or more of the following: web site management, social media marketing, photography/videography, photo and video editing, and digital media development.

  • Social Media—Maintain an active two-way communication online
    • Maintain consistent and timely posts on existing social media platforms (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Four Square, Blog)
    • Evaluate, develop and promote a strong presence on new platforms (i.e. Pinterest, Google+, Hootsuite, etc.)

  • Creative Project—Early in the term, interns will begin to work on a large, creative project of their choosing. Any good idea is an option, but examples include:

    • Creating a virtual tour of our programs
    • Creating a “season” of an original podcast/vlog program

Volunteer Recruitment Specialist

Current Semesters Available: Summer, Fall

Interns will be trained and deployed to effectively assist in the management of a Volunteer department with nearly 2000 volunteers. Through this internship, a motivated college student can get a taste of non-profit administration and leadership, while learning the ins and outs of an effectively run volunteer ministry. They will learn how to recruit, interview and place unpaid workers while also learning about how The City Mission operates.

  • Recruitment, by conducting Volunteer Connection Meetings
  • Screening, interviewing and deploying of volunteers
  • Supervising volunteer groups and individuals
  • Event planning
  • Volunteer records management and scheduling through the usage of the Volgistics database
  • Volunteer newsletter composition and distribution
